Art Nouveau Plique-á-Jour Swan Necklace
Item No. NMN0900995
This Item Has Been Sold
A silver Art Nouveau necklace comprised of two feather-shaped plique-á-jour seafoam-colored plaques accented by small blue glass stones and separated by a bezel-set faux pearl, supporting a third plique-á-jour plaque depicting a swan, with a central cartouche of painted enamel depicting a man standing in a shell and accompanied by a swan. Circa 1905.

"Plique-a-jour" is French, meaning "open to the day". It is a type of enamel in which the design is outlined in metal, filled with enamels and then fired. The groundplate is removed after the firing, leaving behind a translucent enamel that resembles stained glass. It is very fragile and few pieces remain fully intact today. It is an ancient technique revived during the Art Nouveau and Edwardian periods.
