Late Victorian Sterling Silver Mizpah Pin

A sterling silver late Victorian rectangular plaque pin with large beading on the edges, with a cantral oval cartouche containing the word "MIZPAH" and the following phrase: "The Lord watch between me & thee/When we are absent one from another". With original C-catch and long pin stem. Probably English, circa 1880.
Message jewelry were often used as sentimental tokens of affection in the Victorian period; Mizpah messages were some of the most popular. This type of jewelry was usually given to one's lover at the onset of a period of separation, as mizpah is the emotional connection between two separated loved ones.
