Mid-Victorian Square Niello Box
Item No. SSZ08002441
A mid-Victorian square niello box, perfect for storing rings and other small jewelry, desk sundries such as paper clips, or even your daily vitamins. Circa 1860.
Niello is an ancient decorative inlay technique in which the design is engraved in the metal base, which is usually silver as in this case. The engraving is then filled in with an alloy of metallic sulfides that become black when heated. The effect is a velvety black and silver pattern. Niello was revived in the nineteenth century and was especially used in Russia and France. It was often used on small decorative objects such as this box, as well as chains, lockets and other types of jewelry.
